Côte d'Azur

Monday April 11, 2011 Day 285

Four of us got up and packed this morning and we took a noon train to Nice, arriving right at 6:00 p.m. Roger stayed behind. He is not as interested in spending time with my family as I, and he cannot bear to leave his chess.

The train ride was almost 6 hours, including a half-hour layover in Valance. The last couple of hours were really lovely - we traveled along the Mediterranean and saw towns snuggled between the sea and the cliffs and watched the diamonds sparkle on the water.

We had little trouble finding our hotel once we arrived in Nice. We checked in, then went to find dinner. Our hotel concierge recommended a restaurant, but it was closed, so we struck out to find another one which we had researched in our hotel room. I got confused and we spent almost 10 minutes walking in the wrong direction. When we finally got oriented, we found a restaurant and had a really good meal. For dessert, I ordered something called a Cascading Profiteroles, which turned out to be four cream puffs filled with ice cream and topped with whipped cream - enough for all of us and then some!

This little guy watched over the hotel courtyard day and night.
