Tuesday, August 10, 2010 Day 41
After a poor night’s sleep on my part (wherein I got up and spent time on the computer for an hour and a half until I finally returned to bed and to eventual sleep), We started out on our usual rounds. At the market this morning we bought corn – there were ears that looked pretty fresh and we anticipated the taste of fresh corn on the cob. Bummer! It turned out to be field corn, so it had the look and feel of corn, but a taste only reminiscent of corn. Roger said that Europeans generally turn up their noses at corn, considering it only fit for livestock food, and if this is what they are getting, I can understand why. Fresh sweet corn is a real treat, but this rose almost to the level of mediocre. Interestingly, that great U.S. snack of microwave popcorn has not caught on over here either. After looking for it a bit, we found some single packs of microwave popcorn, both salty and sweet (kettle corn, I think), but there was very little space devoted to it. We bought a pack of each. They were .60€ each, or about 80 cents. I don’t know how that compares to the cost of popcorn in the U.S. We always bought ours in boxes of 8 or 10 or more, and didn’t really pay much attention to the price.
