The Arc de Triomphe was erected by Napoleon to commemorate his many victories. It is hard to know what to say about it that you can’t read on Wikipedia. It's big. It has lots of names of French generals, lots of names of battles, lots of allegorical carvings which are lost on me. I find it amusing that when Napoleon entered Paris in 1810 with his new bride, he had a wooden mock-up of the completed arch constructed. I also find it amusing that the Battle of Fuentes de Onoro is described as a French victory, instead of the tactical draw, as most non-French historians apparently view it.
