It was early, almost 6:00, but we were quite hungry. Roger had bought sausages rolled in croissants for lunch on the train, and we had apples as well, but that seemed a long time ago. The first couple of restaurants we came to didn’t open until 7:00, so we strolled the waterfront and walked along the pebble beach (!). The menus were similar – a selection of pizzas and pastas. We chose a lovely restaurant, which had beautiful napkins stuffed into wine glasses so that they looked like flowers. The restaurant, unfortunately, did not live up to its promise – the food was rather mediocre. For a starter, I had gnocchi, which were pretty good, and Roger had spaghetti with a tomato sauce – slightly firmer than al dente. Then we had filet of sole breaded and fried. We were hard-pressed to find the fish in the crust – it was that thin, and there was only one filet. I had a “salad” which was strictly iceberg lettuce, and Roger had fries. For dessert I had tiramisu and Roger had crème caramel. It was quite cool by this time, and we headed back to our room.
Our hotel is quite new, with cheap thrown-together furniture like something they bought from Ikea. Although it is new, they didn’t get it right – the electrical outlets are woefully inadequate. We have a toothbrush, a cell phone and a computer, all of which were hungry. There were no outlets accessible in the bedroom, and only one in the bathroom. The ones in the bedroom were taken up by lamps, the TV, and accoutrements for the TV. The computer came away hungry this morning, but not by too much. If we had realized before we left for dinner that there was a shortage of outlets, we could have plugged the computer in then. Ah, well. . . .
